# Sending from the web portal

The web portal is the simplest way to send. You choose who the message goes to, who it comes from and what it says.

## Recipients

You can send to:

- **A single mobile number**, typed in. For Irish mobiles you can start with `08`. For other countries use the full international number without the `+`, for example `447800000000` for a UK mobile.
- **Contacts and groups** saved in your account. See [Contacts and groups](/docs/sending/contacts-and-groups/).
- **A list you upload**. See [Sending to a large list](/docs/sending/bulk-sending/).

Numbers on your [stop list](/docs/reference/opt-outs/) are skipped automatically.

## Sender

Choose a **reply number** if people should be able to reply, or one of your approved **sender IDs** to show your organisation's name. See [About sender IDs](/docs/sender-ids/about-sender-ids/).

## Message

A single SMS holds up to 160 characters. Longer messages are sent in parts, and each part is charged. An emoji or special character switches the whole message to Unicode, where each part holds far fewer characters. The portal shows the number of parts before you send. See [SMS message parts](/docs/reference/sms-message-parts/).

You can add an **opt-out instruction**, which puts a short link at the end of the message so people can stop future messages. It adds 17 characters, which can push the message into another part.

<!-- NEEDS CAPTURE: the portal's compose screen (menu name, field labels, sender list, opt-out tick box, send button) and a screenshot. -->

## After sending

The message appears in your sent messages, with a status that updates as the network reports back. See [Delivery reports](/docs/replies-and-reports/delivery-reports/).
